Thankfully, healthcare website design has improved tremendously over the past decade. This is largely due to the evolution of industry best practices, the growth, and the maturation of healthcare digital marketing teams and agencies. This growth and evolution have included a heavy focus on applying the principles of digital consumerism.
For healthcare website design, consumerism has meant prioritizing UX and usability best practices (i.e., consumer needs) over internal politics and organizational structure. For example, allowing users to search for services and doctors using treatment keywords rather than having to navigate an internally focused list of departments or specialties. Furthermore, effective healthcare websites now promote access (e.g., providing online self-scheduling and video visits) and transparency (e.g., ratings and reviews for doctors and practices, and pricing information).
Most importantly, effective healthcare website design supports measurable increases in patient volume and revenue. This can be achieved by increasing traffic to a website (organic search, referral sources, social, paid, etc.) and increasing onsite conversion (online appointments scheduled, ER and urgent care check-ins/reservations, virtual visits, form submissions, event and class signups, etc.). Ultimately, our goal is to create an effective user experience that truly moves the needle for healthcare organizations. The examples include websites that have won many awards in 2019.
